ABRAHAM MOON WOOLLEN FABRICS | |
|
1837, the year Queen Victoria succeeded the British throne, was also the year in which Abraham Moon & Sons was founded. Abraham Moon – a figure of considerable standing in the community of Guiseley, inbetween Leeds and the Yorkshire Dales, supplied many locals with yarn to weave cloth on handlooms in their own homes. When the cloth was woven he would collect the pieces – paying the weavers for their work. The cloth was then scoured (washed) locally and hung out to dry in surrounding fields. Abraham would then transport the pieces by horse and cart to Leeds for sale in the market. Thirty years later a 3-storey mill was built and the company was exporting to countries such as Japan as early as the 1890s. By the early 1900s the mill had become as it remains today – a fully ‘vertical’ mill – with dyeing, blending, carding, spinning, weaving and finishing taking place on one site. The design archives of Moon date back to the same period and today the company (still family owned) is renowned worldwide for its traditional values of quality and its innovative use of design and colour. Look out for the following designs available from our shop near York: Baronial:The Baronial Collection arrived in August 2009 as the long anticipated 7th collection in the Moon furnishing range. As well as a host of new checks and over checks there is a a fabulous new design in the style of William Morris, a graded baroque style jacquard design alongside 2 other new jacquards, and a new contemporary stripe effect. “This wonderful range will seduce even those who have never considered tartans” – Homes & Gardens Magazine. Urban Range:Urban is a collection of designs based on loft living, very modern, contemporary designs using strong bold colours. Designs are striking strong visual statements including geometric patterns, zig zag effects and reversible spots. The creative use of reversible fabrics also enables us to use a combination of complimentary colours throughout the collection. Archive Range:Archive is a more traditional collection. By using our unique blended melange yarns we have been able to lift the look of what would be normally considered more traditional designs and give them a new lease of life creating very tonal, commercial looking designs including oversize checks, tweeds, tartans and dobby effects. Heritage Range:The ever-popular Heritage Collection is perfect to create that fresh Scottish countryside feel. This tweed looking collection comprises dobby and jacquard woven traditional tartan, estate tweed and paisley designs. By using our muted melange palette, the designs and the soft colours conjure up the feeling of the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands. Natural Range:The Natural Wool collection is created with the extensive use of undyed wools, reflecting today’s concern for the environment and our awareness of ecology. Wool itself is one of the worlds great natural fibres, a renewable and recyclable resource with natural beauty and timeless value. Antique Range:This is a collection of gentle yet colourful plaids, house tartans, over-checks and the larger more individual herringbone. These designs are all then complemented by a luxurious blended wool damask and pure new wool sateen in rich deep velvety shades . We'd be more than pleased to introduce you to these fabrics and to our helpful service. We supply fabric and matching wallpapers and we make up curtains, blinds, soft furnishings and much more.
